Chuckanut Bay

Chuckanut Bay, Landscape

Chuckanut is a Native term which in English means "long beach far from a narrow entrance."  Chuckanut Island (also known as Dot Island by locals) is the focal point of the bay.  It is a popular destination for Kayakers.

Fog rolls off the Salish Sea and across Chuckanut Bay.  Image was captured from the lookout accessed on the north side of the bay from Woodstock Farm.

Reflecting on the Day

Reflecting on the Day

The sunset reflects off of a tide pool in Chuckanut Bay as a Schooner drops anchor in the bay.  You can book tours on the Schooner Zodiac and sail around the San Juan Islands or rent for a corporate function. I love taking beach photos when the tide is going out around sunset.  The tide pools are full and the plants and mossy rocks are still wet.

Teddy Bear Cove at Low Tide

Teddy Bear Cove at Low Tide

Teddy Bear Cove is one of the few public access points to Chuckanut Bay, which makes it very popular in the summer.  It is a short steep hike down from Chuckanut Drive, but the path is well maintained with plenty of switchbacks.

Chuckanut Wall Cloud

Chuckanut Wall Cloud

An intense storm broke for a moment lighting up Dot Island.  Stormy days can add really cool colors off the water making for great photo opportunities.

Clearing Storm over Chuckanut Bay

Clearing Storm over Chuckanut Bay

This is one of the few locations the public can take in a view over Chuckanut Bay.  The interurban trail has a few clearings as does Hiline/Cleator Road, but this location is the best.  It is easily accessible from Woodstock Farm.  Park and follow the path around the property to this point.

Teddy Bear Cove Beach

Teddy Bear Cove Beach

It's not the Caribbean, but this sandy beach at Teddy Bear Cove is a popular summer destination.  In the winter, you can have it all to yourself.  This is one of two beaches at Teddy Bear Cove.
